So, before I go any farther, I must give a shout-out to Author Amanda Bretz who informed me about this fantabulous site called “I Write Like.”
GO. RUN. CHECK IT OUT HERE!
What’s the idea? Basically, you cut and paste a portion of your work into a field and it analyzes the text (presumably performing some sort of filter-function) and tells you which famous writer your prose most resembles.
I cut and pasted samples of two of my novels and was told I write like:
William Gibson and Chuck Palahniuk.
Disclaimer: I have no idea how sophisticated the formula is (it claims to consider word choice and writing style), so the search may not be terribly accurate.
Bottom line though? It’s fun.
I’m so excited because I’ve never read anything by William Gibson or Chuck Palahniuk. I am totally going to check these guys out now!
If you all try it out, tell me who you write like in the comments! :)

I’m glad you liked the Website so much! It is very fun
So fun!!
Thank you. I needed this. I am going to try this out!!
Also, I write like H.P. Lovecraft. lol
Awesome person to write like!!!

I remember reading about it once… TY for the reminder,
If H.P. Lovecraft wrote a blog, it would apparently be just like mine. Huh!
And that means I also write like Sara Flower.
Heeheeheee. I have such talented blogging buddies.
So much fun! I did two blurbs of text from my WIP- One from the female MC and one from the male MC. The male MC is written like William Gibson. The female MC is written like JD Salinger. Thank you for this link! So much fun!
I know! So fun!!
I put in a block of text from a couple of my recent blog posts. Apparently, I blog like Dan Brown! And then I put in a chunk from my current WIP, and it seems I write like H.P. Lovecraft. Hmmm. Should I be concerned?
Dang…it can’t be a coincidence that there are three H.P.Lovecraft-ish people out of you guys. Maybe this whole “I Write Like” thing is basically cream puffs.
But yay to Dan Brown! I am a total closet D.B. fan. *grins*
Ohhh. I know who I hope to write like, but as you said in your “The Next Big Thing” post, it also feels pompous to think I could ever write like the authors I admire. We’ve gotta be us.
It’s good to be us though. No?
Okay, weird, I got James Joyce and JK Rowling. That seems very weird to me.
Bwaahaaahaahaaa! OK –this is the single most awesome/ironic mashup I’ve seen yet.
This was fun Erin! Mine came back Douglas Adams.
Hitchiker’s Guide! Woot, woot!
Didn’t Palahniuk write Fight Club? Pretty intense!
I tried it out and it says I write like Cory Doctorow and Margaret Mitchell. Hmmmm.
Yup. I don’t think I’m that brutal, but hmmm…maybe so.
Look at you Margaret Mitchell! Tara! Tara!
Dammit! Those are two of my favorite authors and I didn’t land either. I took the test myself and got David Foster Wallace and Cory Doctorow. Who are these people?
Doctorow’s a sci-fi author –kind of a rabble-rouser. Be complimented!
I did this like 12 times. Thank you Erin for enabling my procrastination once again!
The first one came back as Stephenie Meyer (to which I thought “is that bad??”)
The one that mentioned guns returned Raymond Chandler.
I put in a blogpost about wrong-side-of-the-bed-gnomes and it said Frank L. Baum! So there’s definitely a genre/word choice element to it. But you were right. Fun.
Yay! Glad I was able to facilitate some internet procrastination.
(And I secretly like Stephenie Meyer…shhhh)
Even more embarrasing I’ve never heard of either of these guys, though I’m sure they are both excellent authors. I worry that if I submit a small slice of my work they will suggest I write like a member of the Inland Revenue Departement
AHA! That site said I write like Edgar Allen Poe. Really?! AHA! Oh my. Anyway, thank you for this intriguing post.
Very dark. lol. Is that a heart I hear beating?
Apparently I write like James Joyce. And Margaret Mitchell. I am pleased with both of those results. ^_^
